In the High Court of Justice of England and Wales, the attorneys are now preparing their opening statements regarding the lawsuit against Augusto Pinochet.
This case is highly controversial due to the existence of Pinochet’s political immunity which granted him legal protection from being sued unless with permission. Representatives must discuss the extension of this political immunity and whether it can be used in the defendant's favor or not. Three positions will take part in deciding Pinochet’s fate. Plaintiffs seek to condemn Pinochet based on the alleged crimes, Defendants have an interest in preventing any charges against Pinochet as well as to return the general to his former country, and The United Kingdom (UK) as the Case Headquarters take part in deciding what crimes were committed and whether an extradition should be considered as it has an impact on the trial.
